Joel Maat

Director of Safety

Born and raised in Holland, I graduated from HC in 1990 before completing my studies at Davenport University and the Grand Valley State University Police Academy. My journey in law enforcement began in 1997, and I dedicated nearly 28 years to serving the City of Holland. I spent more than 25 years in a patrol vehicle, doing a variety of tasks, with two years doing investigations in the detective bureau. My interests quickly led me into specializing in managing and processing crime scenes, finishing my last two years serving those in mental health crisis as a crisis intervention officer. I also enjoyed the privilege of instructing recruits and officers around West Michigan in areas such as Crime Scene Processing/Management and Emergency Vehicle Operations. Internally, I spent more than 20 years training new officers in the field while also training current officers in control tactics and taser operation. For over 18 years, I had the privilege of serving as the president of our local union, a role entrusted to me by the officers who believed in my leadership. My diverse background has equipped me with the skills necessary to handle a wide range of situations safely and effectively. Safety and security has not only been my passion, but my calling. I owe a great deal of gratitude to my wife, Renee, whose steadfast support has made everything possible. Together, we have raised four wonderful children, two of whom are now married, and we are grandparents to four beautiful grandchildren. We live in Holland and are members of Central Wesleyan Church. There's nothing quite like cruising in our classic car as we head to the beautiful West Michigan Beaches to take in the wonders of God's creation. I consider it a privilege to return to HC and contribute to creating a safe and nurturing environment where both staff and students can thrive.
